Because there has been no updates or maintenance to the WikiDot platform in quite a few years, I decided it would be better to migrate the GRASS for Mac site to a new platform based on GitHub Pages. You can find it at https://cmbarton.github.io/grass-mac It is virtually identical to the current site but will be easier to maintain in the future. The forums are now replaced by a posts with comments. I think that you will need a (free) GitHub account to comment, but it should also be easier for more people to communicate without applying for membership to a site like this one.

I will leave this site up for awhile but will not update it. I'll eventually take it down.

I've just posted new binaries supporting Apple ARM processors (M1 and M2 currently) for GRASS 8.3 and 8.2.1. I also posted a new Intel binary for GRASS 8.3. The Intel binaries also work on Apple ARM processor Macs using its "Rosetta" emulation engine.

Georeferencing doesn't work

Hi, I am experiencing problem with georeferencing scanned maps. After setting GCPs in XY location I can't reproject the data into coordinate location because system message appears saying "Please select a valid location and mapset to continue" as on attached screenshot.

I would attach a screenshot, but the system doesn't allow me to do so.

I am using macOS Monterey 12.4 and Grass 8.2.0, but I get this error also with Grass 8.0.2 and 7.8.6

Announcing a new series of publicly available YouTube video tutorials for GRASS 8. These tutorials, originally created for a GIS course at San Diego State University titled “ANTH 562 Computational Archaeology”, are aimed to help novice to advanced GIS practioners learn how to use GRASS GIS. The subject matter is nominally archaeological GIS, but all the basics of GRASS are covered, as well as some advanced topics, such as Least Cost Analysis, Visibility Analysis, Hydrological Modeling, Terrain Analysis, and more. The sample data used in the tutorials is available in this GitHub repository.

The tutorials will be added to this YouTube playlist.

GRASS 8.0.0 was released at the end of January. It's taken me a couple weeks to get it compiled. It has a significantly updated interface for selecting maps-from a data catalog environment that lets you choose all map types and easily switch between locations and mapsets.

Happy New Year to GRASS users.

In 2022, GRASS is moving to create a new stable release of version 8. This is a major update to GRASS, involving its GUI interface and underlying modules. Keep in mind that a full version update may not be backward compatible with older versions (though this one is backward compatible with most older GRASS functions and commands. I've posted the first formal release candidate.

I also posted a slight update to the version 7.8.6 binary. This binary does not require you to install a separate X11 application (it is not used in GRASS for Mac anyway).

Linking GRASS GIS to Anaconda Python to run in the terminal command

Hi I am trying to run a gapfilling python script from PySEBAL that uses GRASS with the terminal command. I have already installed grass_session with the pip command using Anaconda.

I have tried using the LINUX and Windows environmental variable and run the program
Linux
export GRASS_BIN="/Applications/GRASS-7.8.app/Contents/Resources/bin/grass78

Windows adjusted to the mac
export GRASSBASE="/Applications/GRASS-7.8.app/Contents/Resources/bin/grass78

However, when I run the script, it can't find grass_session because there is no link between Anaconda and GRASS.

Any help someone can provide would greatly be appreciated since I have spent a couple of days going no where. Thanks.

I just compiled and posted new Mac binaries for current GRASS 7.8 (7.8.6 development release with bug fixes) and advanced technology version 7.9. Both contain important fixes for custom location creation. They are compiled with libLAS support (thanks to Nicklas Larsson and Anaconda). This enables the full suite of GRASS LiDAR processing tools. There are also a number of other bug fixes, including better functioning log scaling in color tables and legends, as well as more new features in 7.9.

The new binaries for GRASS 7.9 and 7.8.6 have fixes for v.colors (working increasingly well) and the supervised classification tool for multi-band satellite imagery. There are other fixes and enhancements too of course.

Starting GRASS with multiple languages installed on computer

When I tried to start GRASS, my computer was outputting English and Mandarin as installed on the computer and GRASS didn't know which to choose, so it crashed and didn't start. My brother wrote a new start up script to just mandate English. So it's fixed for me but I wanted to let others know. I'm not good enough with Macs (or computers, really) to be able to understand it beyond this.

I just posted new binaries for 7.9 dev and 7.8.4 dev. These have a number of bug fixes, including fixing the positioning problem with NVIZ and allow you to (finally) quit GRASS from the menu without having to type "exit" in the terminal.

Also, the GRASS extensions issue has been solved as much as it can. If you want to compile anything (including GRASS extensions in C or C++), you must have the Developer Command Line Tools installed, including a current SDK (software developer kit) folder. We cannot bundle these in GRASS because of licensing issues. But it is easy to install the Command Line Tools if you want to compile extensions (or anything else). See new notes on the download page.

I also want to thank GRASS dev team member Nicklas Larsson who has created a really slick way to automate my protocol for compiling GRASS and creating these binaries using Anaconda (originally worked out by Eric Hutton). It is now very easy to create a Mac app if you have Anaconda installed.

I am finally able to (I hope) consistently compile and create new Mac apps for GRASS. Now you have new tech to try out while housebound.

These are both development releases (technically 7.8.3 and 7.9) because they include a number of important fixes for long running Mac problems. Most important of these is that the digitizer finally works again. The interactive classifier for remote sensing training sets may be working too. There are a number of other Mac specific bug fixes.

Also these new binaries are compiled with Python 3.6.10 and gdal 3. I hope to compile future ones with Python 3.7 or 3.8, but these are causing me problems right now. I hope that these new binaries resolve some of the issues few people have been having the last several months.

Note that for some reason, these binaries take a LONG time to open sometimes. I have no idea why. Be patient.

It has been a very long haul fixing problems that prevented me from compiling GRASS with Python 3. They are sort of solved but some still cropping up. I managed to get this version compiled for everyone. Because of university shut downs, and the rest of the world coming apart, I have irregular access to my computer and I'm sure that other devs are similarly limited. I hope that we can get back to a regular pipeline of GRASS for Mac compilations. Until then, I hope that this one will give you all access to some of the most recent improvements.

Hi,

I'm new at this, and i'm trying to work with GRASS within QGIS. First i installed QGIS 3.8 (i had earlier versions), and when i tried to run GRASS commands, QGIS says that GRASS can not be found.

I installed the GRASS 7.7 version in a Macbook pro late 2011, High Sierra OS, and i cant open it, i followed all the instructions for the instalation, but doesn't seemed to work. Appears an OSStatus -67062 error.

I mannualy changed the directory of GRASS at QGIS processing tools, but didn't worked too.

Creating new Location

Hello, i just install grass 7.4.4 on mac 10.14.6.
When, I want create new location I select advanced method- select coordinate system…. There is my problem. I am not able to choose any of projection.
The Terminal is saying:

I just posted the latest, advanced GRASS 7.7 Mac binary. It has many bug fixes for the Mac, as well as new features. As with all my new binaries, this is fully 64 bit and uses advanced wxPython 4. As far as I can tell, the only remaining serious bug is that the digitizer is still broken.

These fixes should be ported to versions 7.6 and 7.4 very soon. I will post new binaries for those as soon as the fixes are in. The development team is moving to release a new stable v. 7.4.2 soon, followed by a stable 7.6.0. Building on a Google Summer of Code project, we are now testing migration to Python 3.

GRASS 7 crashing

GRASS 7 is crashing every time when removing a raster layer on macOS when using the app bundled with the frameworks. Any suggestions on how to correct this? Thank you.

Problem opening GRASS 7.x disk images-No mountable filesystems

When trying to install GRASS 7.x, on opening the unzipped dmg image, I receive the following message:

The following disk images could not be opened
image: grass-7.4.0.dmg
reason: no mountable file systems

Though results for GRASS 7.4 are shown, the problem occurs with all three GRASS 7. disk images on the grassmac site.

The files were downloaded using both Safari (twice) and then Chrome (once) under OS 10.11.6 (El Capitan) w/o success via the Finder.

I then tried running the UNIX clean-up utilities
Then I tried a second reboot

all to no avail.

I was able to mount the disk image using terminal:

$ hdiutil attach -noverify -nomount ./GRASS-7.4.0.dmg
$ diskutil mountDisk /dev/disk2

however…

the newly mounted image was empty. Disk Utility could 'see' the mounted device, and was able to run First Aid, which yielded the following:

'Problems were found with the partition map which might prevent booting'

but couldn't fix the read-only dmg. Everything else, according to Disk First Aid, seemed okay.

I note that these most recent images were not tested under OSXs earlier than Sierra (10.12). Perhaps this [my running El Capitan 10.11] is the problem?

Any suggestions/help [to get GRASS installed] would be greatly appreciated.

Postgresql/postgis support

the 7.4.0 and 7.2.2 .app do not support postgis currently.
It gives:

pg: no such driver available WARNING: Unable to start driver  WARNING: Unable open database  by driver

And v.out.postgis command not available at all.
Seems like it needs to be compiled —with-postgres

fixes/enhancements to posted GRASS for Mac

I've just posted some fixes and enhancements to the GRASS binaries on this site. It looks like it will not be easy (maybe not possible) to build GRASS with libLAS support for direct LiDAR processing the way I am now compiling binaries. There is hope for the future if the GRASS team adopts PDAL as a replacement for no longer supported libLAS (in the works). In the meantime, I've added LAStools command line tools for LiDAR processing and translation to ASCII formats that GRASS can read. Type lasinfo [return] from the command line to see some of this, with more information at: https://rapidlasso.com/lastools/

Also, I've managed to add a fix to a problem found by Rob Shepard. Attempting to create a new LOCATION from an EPSG code failed. It works now. These should all be available in the fully bundled GRASS binaries on the download page.

Problems starting GRASS on OS X

Hi,

Yesterday I downloaded GRASS for the first time. OS X, gras version 7.4.0

I was unable to bootstrap the database as I was unable to create a location. this was the error:

GRASS ERROR 4: Unable to open EPSG support file gcs.csv. Try setting the GDAL_DATA environment variable to point to the directory containing EPSG csv files. ERROR: Unable to translate EPSG code

I finally worked around this problem by running the grass74 binary on the commandline with GDAL_DATA set in the env and using -c EPSG:3857

I then set off a long running operation (r.contours) and went to bed.

GRASS must have crashed in the night at some point as it was not running this morning.

Double clicking /Applications/GRASS-7.4.0 just gives me a program icon but no windows etc.

On the command line I get this:

$ /Applications/GRASS-7.4.0.app/Contents/Resources/bin/grass74 -gui
Cleaning up temporary files…
Starting GRASS GIS…
This program needs access to the screen.

HELP WITH V.VOL.RST

Hello, my name is Miguel Silva and I am new to this group. I need help because I am comparing interpolation methods for precipitation, I am working with all the methods that GRASS has available but the v.vol.rst module is the only one that I can not really use, it generates the interpolation but when I export the raster it only weighs 1kb, and does not have any information.

When I’m doing the interpolation I do not load the raster to perform the cross validation, that’s why I can not do the interpolation well? … I’m not very good at working with commands, so the manual of the module vf.vol.rst, I can not understand it well.

when the method asks me for the name of the layer for cross validation, should I load a raster or vector with values x, y, and z that will be used to perform the validation? ..

If you could help me, I would be very grateful and excuse my English, it’s not very good ..

New Mac binaries at last

After many hours of work over the past year+, I finally have a new way to create GRASS binaries for the Mac. This is due in a large part to the help of Eric Hutton at the Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System (CSDMS) at U Colorado.

These new binaries, built with Anaconda, bundle all dependencies inside the *app, including Python and wxPython. They should be much more robust at avoiding conflicts with other versions of dependency programs you may have installed (e.g., gdal, Python, or wxPython). You do NOT need to install any frameworks for these to work, and they ignore any frameworks you have installed. Also, they do not seem to have any problem running with Apple's System Integrity Protection enabled.

Take them for a spin. I do not know which OS X version can run them. Hopefully all recent ones. Ultimately, I'll be archiving all older versions of GRASS, except the legacy pre-OSX 10.8 versions and replacing them with the new ones.

With Eric's help, there may also be an Anaconda package of GRASS in the future, for those who use that environment.

Grass 7.0 and 7.2 won't start - OSX Trojan virus detected and file deleted

Hi -

I've been using Grass for quit a while on my Mac and began experiencing issues with application startup about 6 months ago. I get the same error many others are experiencing with GUI startup and failure (see error message pasted in below). The offending file is:
/usr/local/lib/wxPython-unicode-2.8.12.1/lib/libwx_macud_gizmos-2.8.0.dylib

I usually delete the app and then reload the frameworks and app to get it running again and it usually works for a while but the same error keeps resurfacing. It happened again today when I started Grass 7.0 (and same for reloaded 7.2; both of which work on this machine).

Today was a bit different - I got a notification from my security software that it detected an OSX.Trojan.Gen virus and deleted the file /Applications/Grass-7.2.app/Contents/MacOS/lib/libwx_macud_gizmos-2.8.0.dylib

It looks like the deleted file is what's causing my application startup error. Same thing happened when I reinstalled 7.2. My guess this has been happening in the background for quite a while and I was missing the notifications for some reason. This is a huge problem for me now because I can't get the program to work and its impacting my research. Im now at the point where I've installed Grass on my Windows machine at home just to to work on some data (uhg….).

Any suggestions as to what to do in terms of a fix would be very helpful.

Grass7 doesn't start with start screen

New install of Grass7.2svn doesn't start with start screen - goes straight to terminal and auto-selects the last mapset and location I was working in. I'm able to start the gui just fine with g.gui wxpython and navigate to other mapsets from there Just a strange behavior that I haven't seen before. Any ideas on how to fix it?

Can GRASS GIS create "view shadows"?

Hello, I'm potentially a new user - and new to this whole field.

I've got a project where I've been asked to create "view shadows" on a topographic map showing what areas of a residential property would be hidden from multiple viewpoints along the road.

I've got a highly detailed topo map in bitmap form, approx 23.5" x 35" at 300ppi (@ 212mb file).

Will GRASS GIS be able to create something like this?

MacOS 10.12.1 Dylib error, gatekeeper disabled

I'm running MacOS Sierra 10.12.1 and disabled Gatekeeper. However, I haven't been able to get GRASS 7.0.3 or 7.0.5 to run. I've attempted uninstalling and reinstalling GRASS and all the dependancies? Any suggestions or fixes?

viewshed issue

I have been using r.viewshed to analyze LOS on GRASS 7.0.4. However, since last week, each time when running r.viewshed, I got an assertion failure:
ami_single_temp_name: G_mkstemp() failed: : No such file or
directory
Assertion failed: (0), function ami_single_temp_name, file
ami_stream.cpp, line 93.

To get rid of the problem, I have tried to uninstall and re-install the frameworks and GRASS. The assertion failure still does not go away.

Can anyone give me some clue about the issue?

I just posted a new binary for GRASS 7.3 built fully 64 bit, with wxPython 3.0.2.0.

It turns out the previous "64bit" grass still ran 32bit Python. This one is fully 64bit AFAICT. I also tried some hacks that might be a way to solve the inability to run GRASS on El Capitan with SIP enabled. There are a couple of known bugs in the wxPython 3.x GUI

1. The most serious is switching to 3D mode and back to 2D mode leaves one of the map display menu buttons corrupted. It seems the only thing you can do is to close the map display and open a new one.

2. There are also some popup lists (e.g., for switching mapsets) that do not behave as they should. You cannot select an item with a mouse (but you can select with arrow keys and ) unless you hit to destroy part of the control. Then you can use the mouse to click something.

Please let us know if you encounter any other bug or strange behavior.

Also, if anyone is running El Capitan, it would be great if you could reenable SIP (if you've turned it off) and see if this version runs.

Of course, maybe I've "fixed" it so that it only runs on my system and crashes on everyone else's.
